Make checkerboard cakes, and eat them too!

I have been slightly besotted with checkerboard cakes in the past couple of weeks.

Although doing it the hard way is definitely an option like Sunita and Ria have tried but I'd rather waste money buy one of these cute little pans and try them (because shopping for bakeware is as much fun as the actual baking part!)

Silicon is all the rage when it comes to bakeware, especially for bundt cakes and muffins.

Divya shares with us her glorious find in Westside Chennai. In her words "I searched high and dry for Bundt pans and Silicone baking moulds in Chennai and Bangalore but in vain. But during my last visit to Westside in Chennai, I came across this lovely bakeware section which had Silicone/Non-stick Baking pans in all shapes and sizes. I chose a Yellow Bundt Pan and a Blue Mini bundt and was jaw-dropped at the price Rs.99 (approx 2 USD) per piece!"

Baking Tins in India, Old Delhi

I remember back when I was living in India, getting ingredients for baking was always frustrating. In fact, sometimes getting the right bakeware in India was tough and usually expensive.

Deeba, the passionate baker we all know, fought through this frustration and emerged with this amazing find in Old Delhi.

Matchless Machine Tools
1730/B, Bazar Lal Kuan, Delhi 110006
Mohd Kashif, Ctc 9311150022

In her own words, "His stuff begins from about Rs30 and then goes up according to what you want. The individual muffin tins/molds were Rs40 or so. He deals in bakery ware, cake mould, bread mould, muffin tray, pizza tray, cake stand, halwai ware, kitchen ware, etc".

Here's Deeba's loot! That's a lot of stuff!!
So why wait, go grab them if you are live in or around that area and make the rest of us jealous.

Brownie Pans - Baker's Edge Brownie Pan & Chicago Metallic

I am a corner-slice girl when it comes to cakes and brownies and anything else that's cut into squares or rectangles. That's where all the action is - the lovely crust and the nice crumbly edges of the brownie, or the frosting on the cake, the main point of it all!

I think Baker's Edge came across this detail sometime and decided to do something this. Check out their "Edge lovers' brownie pan" that is such genius!

Don't think brownies are the only things you can bake in these because lasagne is fair game too!

The Chicago Metallic brownie pans are quite dreamy too. The advantage is, you can remove the dividers and use this as a square pan for baking and with dividers, you can an edge in every slice be it for brownies, cookies, cakes, bread, anything!

The Chicago Metallic lift and serve single square pan is interesting too, because you can remove the base and lift out your single serving of brownies, cakes, etc.

Oh God, I want them all!

Measuring Cups Mania

Thanks to Durga who persistently asked me for measuring cups information, now I have a post on it! MMKT is all about fulfilling your kitchen needs. Or something like that.

Anyway, here's what Mriganayani uses.

In her words, "My measuring spoons and cups - these are a must for baking - but I love the colors in this and also that they can be bunched up together and stored so that they don't just disappear like a lot of my other measuring cups!"

Cost - 12 USD for both the sets

Reema has pretty green ones, check them out!

She says "These come with the universal standards embossed on them - 1, 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 cup. They are super easy to use and I havent taken their tag off because it helps me keep them together. Imagine not finding one of them when you need it! The brand is Ebano, which is possibly why they seem a bit pricey but they are heat-proof so it is okay to dunk them into stuff that is hot."

Where? Hypercity, Inorbit Mall, Hyderabad
Price? 170 INR

Sailu has pretty ones from Ikea. I have the ones on the left because.. well.. they are from measuring cups from Ikea! Check them out.

In Sailu's words, "the red measuring cups and spoons you see above are standard American measurement from IKEA. I use the cups for both Indian cooking and baking while I use the spoons only for baking which requires precise measurement. They are convenient to store requiring less storage space and have the measurements embossed on the handles."

Where? IKEA
Price? Around 8 USD for both

Now lets dream, shall we? 2 Measuring cup sets from my wishlist.

The beautiful cups that Nigella Lawson uses in her videos, they are simple, handy and come in gorgeous colours.

Price: USD 18 - USD 25

My absolute drool-list has these measuring cups from Anthropologie.

Price and other details are here.

So, what do you measure with?

Flan Mould / Cake Mould In India

Getting bakeware in India is probably not the easiest thing. However, a couple of contributors have begun to prove otherwise.

Reema has shared her very cute and chubby flan mould (which you can also use to bake bundt cakes in) with us. She has gone about some creative ways of sourcing bakeware in India although ordering stuff online in ebay.in is really a no-brainer. So get cracking guys, they have some good stuff, last time I checked!

What? Tramontina Brasil non stick cake / flan mould
Where? ebay.in
Price? 399 INR / 9 USD

Thanks a ton for sending this in Reema!
